What’s up, Team!?

Another great week of tennis! This week is part two of last weeks content on the world tour finals.

Last week, we looked at a couple tactics from Sinner and Alcaraz in their separate matches. This week we will be highlighting a few tennis tactics principles with a few points from their finals matchup.

In other news, if you are looking for a Christmas gift for a tennis player, check out The Book on Tennis Strategy!

Let’s dig into it!

This week in our point analysis, we first take a look at the tactics that Jannik Sinner was running on match point and we emphasize the important strategic decisions he made to reduce unforced errors and we use our signature ball tracking feature to really focus on where they are hitting.

In the second video, we highlight Alcaraz’s aggressive play and shot making, only in the end to acknowledge Sinner’s insane athleticism.

Check out the videos below and let me know what you think in the comments!

Tactic of The Week

Shot Sequence

  • Ball 1: Serve on the ad side, up the T

  • Ball 2: Return deep middle and on the same side of the court

  • Ball 3: Server’s first ball, deep line

  • Ball 4: Returner’s first ball, deep cross.

Analysis: This is an opening tactic designed to start the point in a way that both players are working to attack the opponent’s backhand.

There server is serving middle, opening up the ad corner and then attacking it, and the returner doing almost the same thing. By returning middle/line, the returner is trying to disrupt the attack to the ad side, but when the server goes that way anyway, the rally gets shifted to the backhand side with a smart cross court return that could certainly neutralize the situation.

Always look for ways to think in shot combinations when you are starting the point and consider what effect your targets are having on your opponent!
