What’s up, Team!?

It’s been a fun week in the tennis world as we are left analyzing yet another Alcaraz & Sinner match up at the world tour finals. The rivalry continues to develop in really exciting ways.

This week, I have released a couple quick tactical point analysis videos from the early rounds of the world tour finals as a bit of a part 1. One video features Sinner and the other one features Alcaraz. Next week I will take a look at the final. 👀

In other news, the new ball tracking editing is making these point analysis videos looks great! (Its featured in both new videos this week!) And while I can’t guarantee I will do it every time, I do love the effect it has of shifting the focus from how these guys are hitting to where they are hitting. It takes a lot of work to do, but I will be adding this into my videos as often as I can!

Also, we are still actively looking for positive reviews on Amazon for the book on tennis strategy! If you’ve already picked up a copy, please consider taking the time to leave a review to support the project! It would go a long way in helping me make this a sustainable effort to build the #1 resource for tennis strategy! You can leave a review for the book here!

Tactic of The Week

Shot Sequence

  • Ball 1: Serving on the ad side, up the T

  • Ball 2: Return deep cross court, but in the middle of the court

  • Ball 3: Server’s first ball short cross, but in in the middle of the court

  • Ball 4: Unplanned

Analysis: This is an opening tactic where the returner is getting the server on their back foot and applying court pressure and shifting the rally to the deuce side of the court. You’ll see this play out in the Sinner video this week.

The absolute key is the depth of the return target to that zone 3. You’ll see in the video that Sinner did a great job of moving his momentum through the return and landing his shot deep. It’s deep enough to get Ben on his back foot and that’s what produces the shorter ball that we see on ball 3. This creates an opportunity for the returner.

Getting reps in on this pattern can pay off big time when you are able to start points the aggressively as a returner. From here, this specific pattern is where the returner uses their first ball to then shift the rally to the deuce side of the court. In Sinner’s case, he was targeting Ben’s lefty backhand, but setting up this diagonal can also be beneficial if you feel your forehand is better than your opponent’s.
